I must admit that I too have been a little perplexed by Doane's (sudden?) use of the cinematic sign as indexixal,
rather than say iconic. Does she mean that the image indicates an action , represents some thing that happens before the
camera or does she mean in functions to indicate a response, we read the image as indicative of a certain intention? I
can see that icon can be problematic in as much as it forgoes the formal aspects of the image but maybe this all means
we need to devlop a new way of communicating about how the film image functions, a new form of speaking about the image.
Some might say "about time".
