The JISC-funded Digital Preservation Training Programme ran a pilot of its
week-long course in Warwick from October 10th to October 14th. Based on
Cornell's award-winning "Digital Preservation Management Workshop:
short-term solutions to long-term problems", but with significant new
content added by the UK partners, initial evaluation suggests the course
achieved its aims.
Participants were asked to evaluate each module on a 5-point scale from
1 (Excellent) to 5 (Poor) as well as provide specific comments and overall
impressions of the course. This feedback was overwhelmingly constructive
and will be of great assistance to us in helping to improve the course in
the future. Attendees and instructors all felt the week was a success. The
average rating given to all modules was 1.8 (between "Above average"
and "Excellent") and comments included:
"Course was very well organised and informative… well worth attending"
"Ultimately an empowering course - thanks."
"The course has provided an excellent overview of the subject and
having a longer period to study all aspects of it has been beneficial."
"...the most beneficial and well presented, thought out course
that I've ever attended in 10 years as a professional."
The programme collaborators (ULCC and the DPC) would like to thank all of
the attendees for their perceptive feedback, and our colleagues in Kings
College Digital Consultancy Services and AHDS: Archaeology who developed
and presented some of the course material. I would like to express
particular gratitude to our colleagues at Cornell who have been generous
and supportive in sharing their work and have given us an excellent basis
on which to develop an international collaboration in digital preservation
training.
Further independent evaluation will be carried out with attendees to gain
an understanding of other areas such as pricing and subject coverage over
the next few weeks. We intend to deliver the course on at least 4 occasions
in 2006, subject to demand. News about this and further developments in the
programme will be available from the project web pages at
