Greater Manchester SHA is running an 18 month pilot project on behalf of
the DH on for monitoring and management of patients with diabetes and
CVD. This is for limited testing - HBA1c, Cholesterol and HDL and in
some cases INR - and will be based on 4 PCTs. The respective
laboratories are involved in the setting up of this project. The
laboratories also expect to be resourced to provide the quality
oversight of the POCT testing done in the pharmacies, although this is
still being discussed. We are involved in drawing up the tender document
for the provision of the equipment and will be part of the panel making
the selection. Our own PCT has been very supportive of our involvement
and it has been beneficial in bringing the laboratory together with the
PCT.

Under the new GP and Pharmacy contracts, GPs and Pharmacists are
encouraged to provide POCT service that involves, HbA1c, microalbumin,
cholesterol, HDL, coagulation/INR and possibly other tests. The idea is
to develop community based clinical services, that doesn't need referral
to expensive secondary care.
Has any UK list member been involved/consulted regarding this issue in
their area of practice?
thanks
Mohammad
