In this paper:
Healy MJ. Outliers in clinical chemistry quality-control schemes.

there is discussion of the effects of outliers and their trimming on means and SDs. It may help to answer the question.

Subject: Outliers
Thank you for the helpful comments re man with urine pptate.
Now perhaps I can ask a further question, originally the topic of my
message "Outliers".
If one knows the mean, and S.D. of a distibution and the no of trials, is
there a formula to recalculate the mean and s.d. if a single known value is
removed from the distribution?
