I believe it was both words and art. I don't remember ever hearing
about a word collaborator. He's also done opera stage sets: if I'm not
mistaken he's one of the several artists who have worked on The Magic
Flute. David Hockney is another.
Maeread would probably know or know of Chris Van Allsburg at RISD--those
books, esp. Jumanji--are simply wonders...though I felt I had to wait on
Jumanji with my kids because it can be a trifle scary.
His official website is fabulous:

Don't most children's book authors do both "words and music"?
I love what Mark said about some children's literature beginning from an
"oral tradition," then being transferred to paper. I wish I'd had the
imagination years back to think on my feet, make up stuff, and write it
down.
The first children's story--I think it was that--I remember reading was
way over my head but somehow I got it anyway: John Ruskin's "King of the
Golden River." I was no brainiac but I got it anyway, and still
remember some of it.
