medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. December) is the feast day of:
Victor of Piacenza (d. 375) Victor was the first bishop of Piacenza,
serving there for over 50 years. He was a vehement anti-Arian
preacher.
Ambrose (d. 397) Ambrose was born in Trier, the son of the prefect
of Gaul. He became a lawyer in Rome and he soon entered the imperial
civil service, becoming governor of Liguria and Aemilia in c. 372.
But then in 374 the bishop of Milan died. The city was in turmoil
(the last bishop had been an Arian, and Arians and Catholics were
fighting over rival candidates) and Ambrose tried to calm things
down---only to be unanimously elected bishop himself, despite the
fact that he hadn't yet been baptized. After some rapid sacramental
work, he was consecrated bishop today in 374. He started studying
theology, gave away all his possessions, and became one of the
greatest bishops in Christian history, as well as a theologian on a
caliber to win his recognition as one of the 4 fathers of the western
church.
Gerald of Ostia (d. 1077) Gerald was a Cluniac monk, named cardinal
bishop of Ostia after Peter Damian's death. He attempted to
negotiate a settlement between Emperor Henry IV and Gregory VII. It
doesn't seem to have worked.
Humbert of Igny (d. 1148) Humbert was a Benedictine monk who entered
Clairvaux in 1117. After serving as prior there, he was named abbot
of Igny in 1127 and stayed in that position for the rest of his life
(he tried to return to Clairvaux, but Bernard threatened him with
excommunication if he did).
Josepha Rosello (d. 1880) Josepha (baptized as Benedetta) was a
potter's daughter of Liguria. She became a Franciscan tertiary and
after some years she and several companions founded the Daughters of
Our Lady of Pity, dedicated to the education of poor girls, founding
hospitals, and doing charitable work. By the time of JR's death the
congregation had 68 foundations. She was canonized in 1949.
