medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks to Anne Bartlett and Katherine French for your responses to my
enquiry about reader address in late medieval saints' lives. I was able to
make use of both your suggestions (gladly enough we have Anne's book (Male
authors, female readers) in the library). I think the Meditationes Vitae
Christi are another important influence in this development. I checked the
late antique Greek, the Latin and an Old English version of the Life of Mary
of Egypt and found that there are no reader addresses in these versions of
the life. Good. I'm getting somewhere...! Sorry, but I need to exhale
verbally here; I am about to finish the last bits of my PhD thesis and
therefore feel rather happy when loose ends finally seem to tie up after
all.
Merry Christmas to you all.
If anyone is still in need of a Christmas e-card, I just sent a nativity
scene from a 15th c. antiphonary (FRANCESCO DI GIORGIO MARTINI - Nativity,
Museo del Duomo, Chiusi) which is really rather neat.
best wishes,
Sandra
