Besides the use of the word "basilica" as a general architectural type, it came to be
used in a highly technical manner by the Catholic Church as a designation for a
category of church, but this, so far as I have been able to ascertain, is a very late
development of the 18th or 19th century. I have yet to learn of a very clear
definition of this ecclesiastical use of the term, besides the fact that it designates a
very important church of some sort.
