medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. December) is the feast day of:
The Holy Innocents (c. 4 BCE) The unnamed and unnumbered young
children who were killed in Bethlehem at Herod's order, in his
response to the Magis' report that a king of the Jews had been born
there.
Caesarius of Armenia (d. 309) Caesarius not only lived a dissolute
life but he fathered the Arian heretic Eudoxius. He redeemed
himself, though, by being burned to death as a Christian in the reign
of Galerius Maximian
Maughold (d. c. 500?) Legend tells that this Irish prince was a
pirate and thief who was converted by Patrick. As penance, he
chained himself and set to sea in a coracle, coming to shore on the
Isle of Man, where he became a missionary bishop.
Otto of Heidelberg (d. 1344) Otto and his brother Hermann were monks
of Niederaltaich. They became recluses in turn in a cell attached to
the monastery.
