medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Yes, you are right, but the book is selling like wildfire in Italia. One
explanation for the sales is that some Italians intuit that the Vatican
has long covered up an "authentic," doctrine-free version of the "true"
faith in its drive to impose a sacerdotal hierarchy on the Church.
"Evangelical" Christianity is growing fast in Italia, but it does not
have the right-wing connection of its American variety. The Magdalene
cult, too, is less pronounced, albeit the Holy Grail is always a bit hit
in this country, perhaps because the Masons were, and are, strong here.
American reviewers, the few I have read, emphasize Brown's bizarre and
unhistorical interpretations of early Christianity; Italian reviewers
often point to Brown's anti-Catholic and anti-papal sentiments.

I am told that the Italian edition comes with a disclaimer of
historicity.
Perhaps Italian readers are a little less gullible.
