medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. December) is the feast day of:
Ammon and companions (d. 250) Ammon, Zeno, Ptolemy, Ingenes, and
Theophilus were prison guards in Alexandria. They encouraged a
Christian who was being tortured to stand firm in the faith. The
judge saw what they were up to and had them all arrested and beheaded.
Philogonius (d. 324) Philogonius was a great lawyer of Antioch. A
married man with a daughter, he was elected bishop in 319. He was
one of the first people to denounce the teachings of Arius.
Ursicinus (d. c. 625) Ursicinus was probably an Irishman. He became
a disciple of St. Columbanus at Luxeuil, but left to join C. in his
exile. U. founded a monastery at what is now called St. Ursanne
(Switzerland) and worked as a missionary in the surrounding region.
Dominic of Silos (d. 1073) Dominic was a peasant of Navarre. He
became a monk at San Millan de Cogolla and prior in time, but was
driven out by the king when he refused to surrender some monastic
lands. So D. went on to the monastery of San Sebastian at Silos. He
became abbot, reformed the monastery, and made it into one of the
leading communities of Spain, noted especially for its fine
manuscript illumination. D. was known for healing miracles, and for
rescuing Christian slaves.
