medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. December) is the feast day of:
Nemesius (d. 250) Nemesius was an unfortunate Egyptian, arrested as
a thief in Alexandria. He was cleared of the original charge against
him, but then convicted as a Christian, flogged, and burned to death.
Anastasius I (d. 404) Anastasius was a native Roman, elected pope in
399. He was noted for his personal holiness and poverty, and spent
his time condemning people, most notably Origen and the Donatists.
Manirus (?) A Scottish saint, a shaky tradition tells that Manirus
was a missionary bishop in the Highlands of Scotland.
Macarius the Scot (d. 1153) Macarius was from Scotland or Ireland.
He went to Germany and became the first abbot of the "Scottish"
monastery of St. James at Wurzburg.
Urban V (blessed) (d. 1370) William of Grimoard was from Languedoc
and educated at Montpellier and Toulouse. He beame a Benedictine
monk and served as abbot of several monasteries, most notably St.
Victor at Marseilles. He served as papal legate to Italy in 1361 and
was elected pope in 1362. He tried to move the papacy back to Rome,
but was forced to return to Avignon in 1370.
A modern group of martyrs: Thomas De and companions (d. 1839) A
group of five Vietnamese Catholics---three Dominican tertiaries and
two catechists---who were strangled after they refused to renounce
Christianity. They were canonized in 1988.
