medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
To follow up on John Briggs' queries, is there any indication
that "Veni, veni, Emmanuel" (for which a late 17th- or very early 18-
cent. date would not surprise me) arose out of a tradition of
adaptations or syntheses of the O Antiphons?
To descend from great things to small, people are also sometimes
surprised to learn that, although a few of its verses have a known
medieval antecedent, "Gaudeamus igitur" is not attested before 1730.
And then only in a German-language version thought to have been written
ca. 1717. For details, see:

Best,
John Dillon
