medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I came across a passage in a late Middle English version of the Life of Mary
of Egypt, where the narrator calls upon the reader/s to imagine how much
Mary suffered when she endured the adversities of the desert. Does anyone
know whether there are studies that deal with this kind of reader address?
Below is the passage from the original text I am currently editing (Vitas
Patrum, de Worde, Westminster, 1495):
"Lete vs thynke here how many alteracyons aswell by raynes and grete coldes
as by extreme hetes of the sonne žat she endured. Thynke we also how many
carnall temptacyons she threwe fro her, whyche ben so moche dyffycyle to
ouercome to theym that haue ben accustomed therin more thanne ony other
temptacyon."
Thanks for any suggestions!
