Framework for the Future Digital Citizenship Workshop Series 2005
Increasing access, take up and engagement with ICT through the People's
Network
About the workshops
A recent government report states that, "Opportunities to get online are
almost universally available," thanks to publicly funded initiatives
like the People's Network and yet it goes on to acknowledge that "a
significant number of UK citizens remain digitally unengaged." [1]
The harsh reality is that many of those unengaged by ICTs are the very
audiences who stand to benefit most from using them. To help tackle
this, libraries must look beyond simply providing basic access to ICTs.
Partly this means ensuring that ICT services are fully accessible to
all. However the solution also lies in developing and delivering
relevant and enticing digital content and ensuring that people have the
confidence and skills to fully exploit what's on offer to them.
The Framework for the Future action plan aims to help public library
services to improve access, take up and engagement with ICT and digital
services through the People's Network. To help achieve these objectives
MLA is delivering its 'Framework for the Future Digital Citizenship
Workshop Series' in the Spring of 2005.
The workshops, which have been generously funded by the Big Lottery
Fund, are divided into 3 broad themes, aim to:
* support the application and relevance of assistive technology
across the People's Network to provide access to digital services to the
disabled;
* support targeting of excluded groups in the take up of digital
library services;
* & demonstrate how libraries can enable an online environment for
community content creation.
Programmes will combine a mix of presentations covering policy and
strategy as well as practical tips and insights from existing successful
initiatives in these contexts, along with opportunities for discussion
and action planning.
