medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. November) is the feast day of:
Hypatius (d. c. 325) Hypatius was bishop of Gangra in Paphlagonia.
He attended the Council of Nicaea and gave his vigorous support to
the "Jesus = Divine" camp, which of course won. H. then returned
home, where at least part of his congregation was so mad at the stand
he had taken at the council that they stoned him to death.
Dubricius (Dyfrig) (d. c. 545) Dubricius was a Welsch monk who
founded monasteries at Henllan and Moccas---they in turn were the
mother houses of a large number of other monasteries and churches.
Various legends tell that D. was the first bishop of Llandaff,
archbishop of Caeron-on-Usk, the bishop who crowned King Arthur, and
that David resigned the metropolitan see of Wales in his favor.
Lawrence O'Toole (Lorcan ua Tuathail) (d. 1180) Lawrence was a monk
of Glendalough who became abbot at the age of 25. In 1162 he became
archbishop of Dublin, and had the thankless task of dealing with the
English invasion of 1170. L. was named papal legate in 1179 and
continued the reforms that had been going on for the past generation.
He died in Normandy after visiting King Henry II, and was canonized
in 1226.
