medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Esteemed fellow medievalists:
Can anyone tell me when the miracle of the holy fire is first
attested? That is, the spontaneous, miraculous lighting of the lamp
above the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem during the Easter vigil (?)
service. I know it's still going on today, and I've found a mention
of it in an eleventh-century source; was it already an accepted
miracle of great antiquity in the eleventh century?
Best,
Phyllis
