medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. November) is the feast day of:
Colman of Cloyne (d. 606) Colman was a native of Munster (Ireland)
who became a poet and royal bard at Cashel, says legend. He was
baptized at the age fifty, was ordained, and became the first bishop
of Cloyne.
Flora and Mary (d. 851) Flora was the product of a Spanish mixed
marriage---father Muslim, mother Christian. Her mother secretly
raised her as a Christian. But F's brother denounced her as an
apostate; she was flogged and then given over to his custody so he
could win her back to the true faith (Islam). She escaped, but while
praying in a church she met Mary (whose deacon brother had just been
martyred. The two decided to give themselves up as Christians. As
happens so frequently in these legends, they were sent to a brothel,
but remained steadfast to the true faith (Christianity) and were
beheaded.
Conrad of Frisach (d. 1239) Conrad was a professor at the University
of Bologna who became a Dominican. He was an active preacher in
Germany, eventually dying in Magdeburg.
Modern martyrs: The Martyrs of Vietnam (varying dates) The current
pontiff canonized more than 100 martyrs of Vietnam in 1988. They
died in various persecutions ranging from the sixteenth to the
twentieth century.
