medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Gelasius I (d. 496) Gelasius was born in Rome and became a priest
there. He was elected pope in 492. Much of his pontificate was
occupied arguing against Constantinople over the Acacian heresy,
respective rights, and so on. G. also set his face against the
revived festival of Lupercalia in Rome, getting it cancelled
permanently. He did not, however, have anything to do with the
Gelasian Sacramentary that has long been attributed to him.
Respondeo Oriens:
Indeed not. It may be helpful to some of our members to explain what
the Gelasian Sacramentary is. In fact the term is used in two ways:
(1) Of a particular manuscript, MS Vat. Reg. Lat. 316, of the mid-8th
century, in the Vatican Library. As you see, it was written several
hundred years after Pope Gelasius.
(2) Of the class of sacramentaries to which it belongs - in other
words, to other manuscripts containing the same or a similar set of
texts.
MS Vat. Reg. Lat. 316 and other like manuscripts contain the Roman
Canon of the Mass in nearly its traditional form. It is in fact, more
or less, an early "Roman Missal." Strictly speaking, a "sacramentary"
is the book containing the texts which celebrant needs to say Mass -
the Canon, collects and prefaces and a few other prayers - but not the
readings (Epistles and Gospels) which would be contained in the
Lectionary, or the chants which would be sung by the choir, and which
would be in their own book. Again, strictly speaking, a "missal" is a
book containing all the texts needed for Mass, and as such only came
into use when it became common for the priest to recite the entire
Mass.
