I just began this book this AM, so there may be more within it that may

While doing some reading on medieval devotion and images the question of
the status of the images which were the object of devotion suggested
itself. Does an image have to be in a particular setting to be the object
of devotion? The image I had in mind was that of the crucifixion. Images
such as roods and crucifixes were the objects of devotion, yet did they
have to be in the 'proper' setting in order to be the object of devotion.
Would an image of the crucifixion in a book attract devotion (private or
public). Is there, also, any evidence that the crucifixion scenes on Bible
and Gospel covers were objects of veneration in their own right?
Any observations and / or information would be most welcome from List
members.
Yours sincerely
