medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. November) is the feast day of:
Romanus of Antioch (d. 304) Romanus was a Palestinian who served as
a deacon at Antioch. He was arrested for egging on Christian
prisoners to refuse to sacrifice to the state gods and sentenced to
be burned to death---but was saved by a convenient rainstorm. Then
he was tortured some more, and finally strangled.
Mawes (6th cent.) Mawes (or Maudez) was most likely an Irish monk
who spent time in Cornwall, then became a hermit on the island of
Modez (off the coast of Brittany), from which he preached widely. He
probably founded several monasteries and churches in both Brittany
and Cornwall.
Odo of Cluny (d. 942) Odo was a canon at Tours before becoming a
monk at Baume and in 924 became abbot there. Baume was of course the
mother house of Cluny, and Odo went on to become abbot there in 927
when the founder Berno died. Odo proved to be even more impressive
than Berno, serving as a mediator, reforming monasteries, writing
ethical treatises, theology, and hagiography, etc.
A modern saint: Rose Philippine Duchesne (d. 1852) Duchesne was born
in Grenoble and joined a convent there. When all religious houses
were closed during the Terror she hid priests and did her bit to keep
things going, then reclaimed the convent when it was safe to do so.
She couldn't find enough fellow nuns, so the house was amalgamated
with the congregation of the Sacred Heart. D. founded a convent in
Paris, then in 1818 was sent with four sisters to work as a
missionary in the Louisiana Territory. She became a teacher there,
especially focusing on Native Americans, apparently impeded by the
fact that her English was poor and her grasp of Indian languages was
worse. She was canonized in 1988.
