medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'll try again. Apparently I typed an X instead of an x. We'll see.

You might find this depiction of a star interesting:

The star of Bethlehem, as a daisy or some sort of flower, figures in the dream of the magi at Autun. If I remember my Gospel story correctly, this scene conflates the star that guided the magi with the dream in which they were warned by an angel to stay away from Herod - no mention of a star in the dream.

Dear Marjorie, I wasnt confused as such. The star in my picture is clear.
What I was interested in was if you had new lights on stars - to coin a
phrase. The meeting of the Magi under the star is not shown commonly. The
Adoration is a much more usual scene. The artist has reverted to an earlier
depiction of them in short skirts and phyrigian caps, though he does include
one old, one young and one black. The city twinkles away in the background
as they show each other their gifts in the starlight. As my study is an
iconographical one, any new significiance of any element is of interest. i
missed the aurora borealis which appeared visisble from Ireland this week.
Grace.

in the Gospels of Luke and/or Matthew, and guided the magi to the Christ
child. The cross in the star is a favorite device of iconographers desiring
to link the Incarnation with the Redemption, similar to the practice in
medieval art of placing the newborn Christ on an altar rather than in the
cushy manger of Renaissance art.
