Free staff training in using ICT to promote reading - Extra free one day
session available on Adult Reader Development

The Society of Chief Librarians - South East Region is offering free
training to Library staff in the South East in the use of ICT for Reader
Development. Please distribute this to any staff who may be interested and
who can pass on their skills to other staff. Booking details are outlined
below.
This training is funded by the New Opportunities Fund and is being carried
out by The Reading Agency. The training will also include a pack and
toolkit and guidance on training front line staff in the skills and
knowledge acquired.
Main elements of the training are:
· Cascade reader development training to large numbers of staff
· Act as an advocate for Reader Development using ICT within their
authority, able to provide expert assistance and information to members of
staff
· Act as a reading champion, ensuring that ICT encourages staff to
communicate enthusiasm for reading to customers
· Make use of web based resources to respond quickly to enquiries
from people wishing to expand their reading range
· Make use of web based resources in order to confidently recommend
books to the public
· Use web based resources to assist in promoting reading and books,
for example through displays, events
· Create interesting content using the library website: this could
include
o Review writing
o Setting up an on-line reading group
o Interactive fora, such as message boards
· Train the public to make use of ICT reader development resources –
run ICT book doctor sessions
· Access the web as a resource for creative writers looking for
advice, support and exposure for their work
· Keep up to date with developments in reader development and
literacy using ICT
