medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Grace,
I'm a bit confused about your confusion. The star in question is mentioned in the Gospels of Luke and/or Matthew, and guided the magi to the Christ child. The cross in the star is a favorite device of iconographers desiring to link the Incarnation with the Redemption, similar to the practice in medieval art of placing the newborn Christ on an altar rather than in the cushy manger of Renaissance art.
If I've completely misunderstood your question, a thousand pardons.
MG
