medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. October) is the feast day of:
Apollinaris of Valence (d. c. 520) Apollinaris was the son of St.
Hesychius of Vienne. In c. 492 his brother (St. Avitus of Vienne)
consecrated A. bishop of Valence. A. and other bishops were exiled
when a synod condemned a Burgundian official for incest and the king
sided with the official. But A. was recalled when his cloak cured
the king of a mysterious illness.
Magenulf (d. c. 857) Magneulf was a noble of Westphalia. His
godfather Charlemagne arranged for M's education at Paderborn, where
he went on to receive a canonry and become archdeacon. M. founded a
convent on his estate at Bodeken. He is called one of the apostles
of Westphalia, thanks to his dedicated preaching.
Aymardus of Cluny (d. 965) Aymardus was the third abbot of Cluny, a
reformer whose abbatial career was cut short by blindness. He
resigned and lived out the rest of his life at Cluny.
Flora of Beaulieu (d. 1347) Flora was a native of Auvergne who
became a Hospitaler nun at Beaulieu in 1324. She was a mystic, known
for her visions, ecstasies, levitations, and ability to live for
weeks without food.
A modern saint: Francis Xavier Seelos (blessed) (d. 1867) FXS was a
Bavarian who became a Redemptorist priest. In 1843 he set out for
the United States to work with the German immigrants there. As a
priest, he drew crowds, and had a very lively ministry in a number of
states. In 1866 FXS heard of a large flow of Germans to New Orleans,
and set out to minister to them---to find himself in the middle of a
massive yellow fever epidemic. He worked with the fever victims
until he himself died of the disease. FXS was beatified in April
2000.
