medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Sorry,
I´m mixing my miracles! And I´ll look up your translation at once!

I published a translation of this piece in Magistra, vol. 1, no. 1, 1995. Aelred himself appears to have been skeptical about what happened but says he could find no evidence of a birth or any collusion by the nuns to clean up the mess it would have made. He examined the nun and she seemed fully restored as below. I think you have to call it an abortion miracle insofar as anyone was ready to accept it as a miracle though the nun's own dream seems to suggest another solution.

>In a childbirth miracle of the type I am discussing (which needs a less general "title"), a woman gives birth (as evidenced by blood, afterbirth etc.) but the child is miraculously spirited away by a saint, as in both the Pregnant Abbess and the Nun of Watton stories.<
I've just checked Giles Constable's account of 'Aelred of Rievaulx and the Nun of Watton' (from Medieval Women ed. Derek Baker) where it states that, although the nun dreamt that the baby was taken away by 'two beautiful women', she was found in the morning to be healthy and girlish, 'not to say virginal' and, when inspected 'no trace of the birth' was found - so a childbirth or abortion miracle? Can anyone clarify?
