medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear listmembers,
In addition to my search for allusions to Christ the hunter, I am also
interested in references to Christ defeating Satan on Calvary by outwitting
him in a game. The Gaelic Irish poets of the late medieval period enjoyed
speaking in terms of Christ checkmating he devil in a game of fitchell (as
chess was called in Gaelic Ireland) by his Passion and Death. Are there any
other instances of Christ specifically defeating Satan on Calvary in the
metaphor of a game of some sort? This ties in, of course, with the old
notion of Christ outwitting the devil to reclaim humanity for himself – an
image that was quite common in the late patristic period.
Best wishes,
Salvador Ryan
