medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> But, but... I also have Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, which updates my machine
every day and has quarantined several files which crept in through something
other than an e-mail attachment.
and i'm sure that it will work 99.999% of the time --until some viral code
slips through their net.
and, statistically speaking, that 1 time out of 100,000 is as likely to be the
next one you open as it is to be the 99,999th.
you want to allow your curiosity about weird, unsolicited .exe files to rule
the day, be my guest.
me, i'm with Frank & Bob : Paranoid as Hell, and proud of it.
i mentioned yesterday (day before?) the possibility of .jpg files being
infected (i.e., simply opening a .jpg will execute code).
this is a new development --just a few weeks old, apparently-- which i only
heard about this week and haven't had a chance to read more about yet.
astonishing and difficult as it may be to believe, this .jpg virus takes
advantage of a flaw(!) in a Microsoft program (!!!) [SIC].
so, one can try to read about it on the Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-028.mspx
or, one can search around for a plain laguage explanation --i like the
allteration in this one :

"Poisoned Picture Peril"
needless to say, if simply displaying a .jpg file in a browser can cause
malicious code to be run on the hapless viewer's machine, "it's all over but
the shoutin" (as we used to say down in the Texas of my youth), the Fat Lady
will have Sung and the WWW will be nothing more than a Tosted Memory.
apparently, we haven't reached that point, yet.
meanwhile, a Pox on any who might send attachments of Any sort to this list.
