medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all!
Could I ask that when list members supply information such as that below, that they
provide complete bibliographical information (or a link to the publisher) so that we can
easily order copies of their works? This is especially important for those of us in the
US whose librarians may have trouble dealing with anything they can´t find on Amazon.

Dear All,
English translations of both the Cornish and the Breton vitae of Melor (as he's known in Cornwall, where he is patron of Mylor and Linkinhorne) are available in Canon Gilbert Doble's excellent series of pamphlets on 'The Saints of Cornwall'. These have been collected and reprinted by Llanerch Publishers: Melor is included in volume 3: 'Saints of the Fal.'
It is notable that Melor is given particular veneration in Celtic countries, as his story is reminiscent of other, older tales concerning Lludd Llaw Ereint (Wales) or Nuadha (Ireland). In Celtic law, only an unmaimed man could hold a throne.
For more on this (and other hagiographic oddities), see my monthly column 'For All the Saints' in the Fortean Times. Melor appears in FT 189 (November 2004).
