medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. October) is the feast day of:
Narcissus of Jerusalem (d. c. 215) Narcissus was already old when he
became bishop of Jerusalem. He was a strict disciplinarian, and some
of his opponents denounced him for supporting Roman customs. N.
became a hermit for several years, then returned to his see. He
seems to have lived to the age of 119.
Theuderius (d. c. 575) Theuderius (or Chef) became a monk at Lerins
and eventually founded a monastery near Vienne. He himself spent the
last twelve years of his life as a recluse.
Colman of Kilmacduagh (d. c. 632) This Colman (one of a great many
Irish Colmans, all of them impressive) lived as a solitary at Burren,
Co. Clare. He built a monastery at Kilmacduagh, and was the first
bishop there.
Abraham of Rostov (12th cent.) Abraham was the son of non-Christian
parents, but was miraculously cured of a disease as a young man,
converted, and became a monk.He founded the monastery of Rostov
(Russia) and was a very active evangelist.
A modern saint: Mary Restituta Kafka (d. 1943) (blessed) Kafka was a
native of Vienna. In 1914 she joined the Franciscan Sisters of
Christian Charity, and settled in to a career working as a surgical
nurse. She was an outspoken opponent of the Nazis when they moved
into Austria; matters with them came to a head when she hung
crucifixes in every room of a newly completed hospital ward and
refused to take them down again. She was arrested as a traitor, and
executed to intimidate other opponents of the Nazis---although she
was offered her freedom if she would abandon her religious community.
She was beatified as a martyr in 1998.
