medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Marijim,
I read Chrysostom, and I thought it will be no big deal to run a search
in Greek on the TLG (which has mostly the PG texts - there is no
independent searchable PG database to my knowledge).
Tuba is salpingx in Greek (Biblical), loud is possibly lampra /
lamprotera depending on context, etc.. There are 256 occurrences of
salpingx in the available Chrysostom texts (no wonder: it shows up a
couple of dozen times in the Bible, too). I checked those texts which
looked to me as possible candidates for translation into Latin. I must
have been inept, however, as I could not find the Greek text which would
fit the wording you mentioned.
I suggest further specifications: where did you find the text? What
context? Author or century? Provenience? Do we know anything about the
translation? (e.g. Burgundio of Pisa or other)? How sure is it that the
text comes really from Chr'tom? These pieces of info could help greatly
the Greek retroversion you would have to work with.
But some people with better Latin-to-Greek skills may have found that in
between.
Best,
George

Dear Learned Ones, Do any of you have access to a CD ROM of PG? I need
to
find the souce of a quote attributed to Chrysostom: This trumpet wil be
blown so
loudly that it will be heard throughout the world all the way to hell.
Concerning this voice Chrysostom says: Vere vox magna, vox tube
terribilis, cui
omnia obediunt elem[en]ta, qu[a]e petras scindit, infernum aperit,
portas [a]ereas
frangit, vincula mortuor[um] dissolvit, et de profundo abyssi animas
liberatas corporib[us] suis reddit et ad iudiciu[m] ir[a]e compellit.
Many thanks for
any help. All best wishes, Marijim Thoene
