Back in August I asked if any authorities have plotted their mobile library
stops on a GIS in order to use other data to help plan new mobile stops.
(GIS is Geographical/Graphic Information System - Basically an interactive
map which can hold all sorts of statistical data.)
Here is a brief analysis of the replies.
The fact that I only had 6 replies probably shows that there is not a lot
going on in libraries in this area, although most, if not all local
authorities will have a GIS, probably based in their highways department.
3 authorities said that they were starting to use the GIS for mobile library
work. One of these is looking at the areas of potential new stops and using
the GIS to look at the profile of the community.
2 authorities were hoping to start using GIS soon.
The final reply was from aGIS officer who said that the mobile stops had
been plotted over 2 years ago but he had not been asked to do anything with
the data since.
So there you have it - I am sure there is great potential in using the GIS
to assist in mobile route planning, but for whatever reason, librarians are
not yet exploiting it as fully as we can.
