medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. October) is the feast day of:
Frumentius (d. c. 380) Frumentius was a native of Tyre. Everyone
but F. and his friend (maybe brother) Aedesius were killed when a
ship they were on stopped on the coast of Aksum (Ethiopia, generally
speaking). They were taken to the king's court and freed when he
died. The two introduced Christianity to the kingdom. F. eventually
went to Alexandria to ask Athanasius for a missionary bishop;
Athanasius responded by consecrating F. as bishop of the Ethiopians
and sending him back.
Abban (d. 620) Abban was a son of the king of Leinster and became a
disciple of his uncle, St. Ibar. A. founded churches in Co. Wexford
and two monasteries.
Emilina (d. 1178) Emilina became a Cistercian nun at a young age at
the convent of Boulancourt. She was famous for her deep prayer and
very painful-sounding austerities; people came from considerable
distances to receive her spiritual advice.
