medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. September) is the feast day of:
Bertinus (d. 700) Bertinus was a monk of Luxeuil, sent to help St.
Omer with his missionizing. B and two fellow monks built a monastery
at what is now St. Mommolin (with Mommolinus as abbot), another at
Sithiu (with Mommolinus also abbot at first, but B. taking over in c.
661). B. built Sithiu (later named St. Bertin's) into one of the
great monastic centers of the kingdom of the Franks and also
evangelized the region.
Gentilis (d. 1340) (blessed) A Franciscan friar, Gentilis became a
missionary in Egypt and Persia. He was executed at Toringa, Persia
in 1340 and beatified by Pius VI.
Laurence Giustiniani (d. 1455) Laurence was a Venetian noble. He
became a canon regular at age nineteen and took to a highly ascetic
life, including going around the city begging. He also preached
widely, and was appointed bishop of Castello (which at that time
included Venice in the diocese) in 1433. In 1451, when the see of
Castello was suppressed, the pope made Venice the metropolitan see
(degrading Grado) and made L. archbishop/patriarch. He seems to have
been a model bishop and even wrote several mystical treatises. L.
was canonized in 1670.
A modern saint (or at least blessed): Teresa of Calcutta (d. 1997)
Teresa was an Albanian who became a nun and went to India in 1928.
In 1948 she left her convent to work alone with the poor, becoming a
citizen of India. In 1950 she founded the Congregation of the
Missionaries of Charity, which now operates in 30 countries. T. was
beatified in 2003, and canonization proceedings are underway.
