medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. September) is the feast day of:
Onesiphorus (d. c. 80?) Onesiphorus is mentioned in the second
letter to Timothy. Legend tells that he accompanied Paul to Spain
and then back east, where somewhere in the Hellespont he was torn to
pieces by wild horses in Domitian's reign.
Donatian, Laetus, and companions (d. c. 484) Donatian was one of the
northern African bishops who objected to the Arian king Huneric
closing all catholic churches in his kingdom and turning over all
possessions of the catholic clergy to their Arian counterparts. They
were tortured and then driven out into the desert, where they all
died of exposure. Except for Laetus, bishop of Leptis Minor, who was
imprisoned and then burned to death.
Chainoaldus (d. c. 633) Chainoaldus (aka Cagnoald or Cagnou) was so
impressed by St. Columbanus that he became a monk at Luxeuil. He
accompanied Columbanus to his exile at Bobbio, after which he became
bishop of Laon.
Bega (7th cent.) Legend tells that Bega was the daughter of an Irish
king who fled on the day of her marriage to a son of the king of
Norway (!) She got a divine boost to Cumberland, where she became a
hermit but soon settled down as a nun at the convent (St. Bee's) that
she founded.
