I'm afraid you've lost me here. It seems quite possible to have a translation feast even if the latter does/did not commemorate a canonization. E.g., Cono (or Conus) of Naso (no formal canonization; cult confirmed in 1630 with principal feast on 3. June and feast of translation on 1. September).

What proof is there that it was this feast, rather than -- as John Wickstrom asserts -- a (presumably later) translation feast falling on the same day, to which the twentieth-century church of Rome moved its principal commemoration of Gregory? _Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem_ is good doctrine generally, but there may be a factual basis for John W.'s assertion here. Perhaps when the present USAmerican holiday weekend is over we will be fortunate enough to learn what it is.
