medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks for that, George--I lack a lot of Biblical background and
knew of the Vetus latina but had not run across a Vetus itala until now.
I was just googling it and deciding they were probably the same, just that
I did not know the other term or why the edition changed the term.
Still, it would be odd for Barthol. Anglicus in the 13th century
to be reading anything but Jerome, glossed or not, would it not? He
lectured cursorily in Paris on the "whole Bible" briefly, but what little
I've picked up on such lectures indicates they would not be textual
studies comparing pre-Jerome versions with Jerome.
I'm one of those of the opinion that he did much/most of his
encyclopedia out in the sticks of Magdeburg, where he was sent to run the
Franciscan studium, and it is less likely he had a good library there, but
I've yet to read Bert Roest's most recent book on Franciscan education.
Biblical sources so far are pretty close, but tend to omit or change
details; this Psalm bit is the first time I saw Barthol. add anything, and
it just looks strange.
