medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. September) is the feast day of:
Ailbhe (d. c. 526) Ailbhe was a preacher in Ireland with a lot of
legendary additions to his story (even by the standards of Irish
hagiography). Thus Ailbhe was abandoned as an infant and only saved
from an early death by an obliging she-wolf, etc. We don't even know
where in Ireland he was, although he may have been first bishop of
Emly.
Guy of Anderlecht (d. c. 1012) Guy was born near Brussels, the son
of a poor family. He became sacristan at the church in Laeken, but
eventually set off on foot to visit Rome and Jerusalem. He returned
seven years later and died almost immediately. Miracles were soon
reported at his tomb, and a shrine was built.
Degenhard (d. 1374) Not formally canonized, Degenhard was a lay
brother at the monastery of Niederaltaich who became a hermit in
Bavaria. He spent thirty years in his hermitage, winning renown as a
spiritual advisor.
A modern saint: Victoria Strata (d. 1617) The Genoese Victoria was
widowed at the age of 25 and intended to remarry so someone would
help tend her six children, but the Virgin Mary told her in a vision
not to. So she raised the six kids alone, devoting the remaining
time to prayer and charity. Then in 1605 she and ten friends founded
a convent, which became the mother house of the "Blue Nuns" (not to
be mistaken with the cheap wine, I hope).
