medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Denis Hüe
In your context is the definition of 'cappa' by Blandine-Dominique Berger the best you will find. It was an outdoor overcoat. 'Monks' did not walk around dressed in a Pluviale:-)
If you are in doubt is the best documentation found in Joseph Braun:
Die Liturgische Gewandung im Occident und Orient, (Freiburg 1907)
photographic reprint: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt 1964.
Braun has ample documentation for the use of the word, and the form of the costumes. 'Cappa' could mean both the outdoor overcoat and the 'pluviale',
which Braun mentions as a 'liturgical cappa' (see the chapter 'Das Pluviale' p.306-358).
The cappa of the monks is the form of overcoat as we usually see it
depicted in representations of St. Anthony in the desert (it could be
all kind of colours, not always black).
If you read your text again will there probably not be left any doubt
if it is a 'manteau avec capuchon' or a ceremonial pluviale.
Best
Erik
