Some of you will be pleased to know that we have added more translations to our Norfolk "Welcome to the Library" site: http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/welcome.htm The latest additions are Bulgarian and Kurdish, bringing our total to 32. (There's a good Geordie one available as well; it doesn't appear with the others - but let me know if you want a copy!)

announce a seminar entitled:
E-books: how to make them work
Liverpool John Moores University, 1.30 p.m., Wednesday 10th November
Provision of electronic books (e-books), particularly from a library =
and
information perspective, has developed rapidly and significantly during
recent years. As a result, understanding of the impact of e-books upon
library and information services and their users is a current topic of
interest. This seminar seeks to illustrate some of the varying e-book
activities currently in place. A case study of consortium purchasing of =
e-
books and their impact on an academic community will be followed by a
presentation illustrating the views and activities of JISC. Finally an
insight into some current research into e-book activity will allow
attendees of the seminar to enjoy three different but significant
perspectives on e-book use.

http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community
A website created for anyone with a love for heritage...
261 parishes, 1 website.
* Scanned images
* Full text for many articles
* Scanned, searchable, historical texts coming soon
* Scanned maps
* Population figures
* List of historical newspapers covering the area
* FAQs
* Local authors and literary connection
* School and church histories
* Thumbnail histories being developed for each community
* A library site which promotes community knowledge and increases
interest in our rural areas
You may be interested to visit Wiltshire Library and Information Service's
"Community History" website. Developed in-house by librarians, led by Local
Studies Librarian Michael Marshman, this popular site is planned to develop
further over the next few years, allowing us to deliver yet more locally
based content virtually to users all over the county, and, we have
discovered, the world.
All 261 parishes in Wiltshire have basic information included, such as
population figures from 1801, and maps, with 44 communities including our
larger towns, having full entries including a "thumbnail history" and
detailed information about schools, churches, local authors, and with images
both historical and current. We aim to add full information for all 261
communities across the next few years. Part of this work will include the
digitization of many texts, making them freely available on the site.
The site is well used by the public, with questions and visitors from all
over the world, and has been well received by many local schools.
A simple database structure allows searchable archives of frequently asked
questions, as well as quick access to images and a range of information.
The website has been developed entirely by the Library Service, with help
from the web team at Wiltshire County Council. We'd love you to take a
look!
