medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. August) is the feast day of:
Lawrence (d. 258) Lawrence was a deacon of Rome, martyred during Valerian's persecution. Several early writers tell of how, when the Roman prefect demanded the church's treasures, L. presented him with the destitute of the city, who had received all the church's possessions as alms. The prefect was not amused, and had L. martyred by broiling on a grill---he is supposed, at one point, to have told the executioner to turn him over since he was "done" on one side. L's cult spread throughout the Roman Empire very quickly.
Philomena (?) A set of bones of a young girl were found in the catacomb of Priscilla, with the inscription: "Peace be with you, Philomena." Clearly a saint. The relics were moved to the church of Mugnano del Cardinale near Nola in 1805 and miracles were soon reported. P's cult spread widely and was authorized in 1837. But she was removed from the calendar in 1961 because there's no evidence at all that she was a saint (posthumous miracles apparently not being enough in this case).
