medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've just caught up with this after a fortnight's leave. I don't know
whether our Welsh rood lofts are bigger than English ones - Llancarfan and
Colwinston (Glam) are both about 3m wide, and Llandderfel (Meir) was said
to be able to hold 60 people. Also, several Welsh churches have squints to
one side of the chancel arch at rood loft level, suggesting possible
locations for rood altars, and others have pierced wainscotting or tympana
to the east, possibly to allow people kneeling in the loft to see the
Elevation.
Llandderfel also has its late medieval choir stalls. No evidence of
collegiate structure (that I know of): but it was a wealthy church because
of the offerings of pilgrims to the wonder-working image of St Derfel. I
don't have a note of other Welsh parish churches with choir stalls, but
Crossley and Ridgway's series of articles on Welsh roods, lofts and stalls
in Archaeologia Cambrensis 1944-59 is pretty comprehensive.
