medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
1) saints with a reputation for aiding seafarers (Nicholas and Clement come
to mind immediately -
are there others?)
Saint Dunchad Abbot of Iona - patron of sailors in Ireland
Saint Brendan the Navigator
Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne - known to appear on the sea when ships are in
danger
Saint Cannera of Inis Cathaig (Scattery Island)
Saint Cannera walked across the water, so sailors honour their
patron by saluting her resting place on Scattery Island (Inis
Chathaigh). They believed that pebbles from her island protected the bearer
from shipwreck. A 16th-century Gaelic poem about Cannera prays,
"Bless my good ship, protecting power of grace"
