medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
On Monday, 9. August, I wrote:
"Procession of the local patron saint by boat is not uncommon in south
Italian ports: Gennaro at Naples (represented by a vial of his blood),
Cataldo at Taranto, and Erasmo and Marciano at Gaeta (represented by
statues) come to mind right away. At Crotone, the procession to the
sanctuary at Capocolonna is likewise patronal in nature..."
South Italian processions by boat of the BVM that _do_ focus on the Virgin's role as protectress of seamen occur at Catanzaro, at Gaeta, and at other places during festivals of Our Lady of Safe Harbour (Madonna di Porto Salvo). Gaeta's version takes place on or right after the second Sunday in August (so we've just missed it) and is said to be documented from the central Middle Ages onward.
Best again,
John Dillon
