medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
One of my favorite workshops ever was a "Field Guide to the Saints"
exploring the ins and outs of saint identification in medieval art
through their iconography. As I recall, the entrail-winding slide was
one of several reasons the class description ended (only sort-of
tongue-in-cheek) with the words, "Violence, adult themes."
The best part of the class was the "pop quiz" at the end -- about
twenty slides of illustrations we hadn't seen before. Imagine a
roomful of usually dignified adults chorusing "Barbara!" "Hubert!"
"Jerome!" <g> It was great fun.
