medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. August) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Rome (d. c. 357) Eusebius was a Roman priest and an opponent of Arianism. He was forbidden to say mass in any church in Rome, but did so in his own home, was found out, and was imprisoned in a small room of his house (where he died after seven months). The source for this is not trustworthy; the only certain fact is that E. existed and founded a church in Rome.
Marcellus of Apamea (d. c. 389) Marcellus became bishop of Apamea (Syria) after serving as a judge on Cyprus. He went about destroying temples, and a group of disgruntled pagans responded by burning him to death.
Fachanan (6th cent.) The Irish Fachanan studied under St. Ita. He founded the monastery of Molana and later the monastic school of Ross, which became a very important monastic center.
Athanasia (d. c. 860) Athanasia was from Aegina. She became a nun when her second husband became a monk, turning their home into a convent. She spent some years in Constantinople as advisor to Empress Theodora.
A modern saint: Maximilian Kolbe (d. 1941) One of the great inspirational stories of the 20th century, Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan. While still in seminary he and friends founded the Militia Immaculatae, devoted to converting sinners, etc. This became a massive and international enterprise, and by 1939 MK's monastery in Poland was the largest in the world (with nearly 800 brethren). The work was considered anti-Nazi, however. The monastery was closed down and MK sent to Auschwitz. Ten prisoners escaped and the commander ordered ten randomly chosen prisoners starved to death in retaliation. MK volunteered to take another man's place, and after weeks of starvation was killed by lethal injection. He was canonized on 10. October 1982 (which must be about the first of John Paul II's long list of canonizations?).
