If Constantine had really experienced a "baptism of desire" he would
have given up his hopes of becoming emperor, ceded the Milvian Bridge
to Maxentius and led a very different life for the next twenty-five
years. You can't eat your cake and have it. Constantine accepted
neither baptism nor the lifestyle associated with Christianity until he
was dying.
I for one am rather glad he didn't.
