Sorry Marjorie,
It should have been "ou". I don't know what Bulteau's source for this was, so can't
explain the rather diverse choice of namings.
En anglais:
Having come to Chartres in 1510, [Queen] Anne de Bretagne, while she made her
devotions at the feet of Our Lady [a statue, undoubtedly], was ravished by the voice
of a young choir boy named Jean Fabri or Jean Lefebvre. She asked the canons to
give him to her; and to thank them, she said to them: "Gentlemen, you have given
me a small voice, and I shall give you a large one". Which she did, giving them a
bell that has ever since been called by her name, Anne de Bretagne.
Little Jean doesn't seem to have had much choice in the matter, but royal
"ownership" undoubtedly had its advantages for him.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
