So - in line with Vatican II, still, despite the apparent
contradictions!
Thank you, Rebecca, for your interesting contribution. The difference
between the General Calendar and the many local calendars often
confuses the unwary. A particular curiosity at the moment is the new
calendar for England, which includes feasts for a number of European
saints. This results in some anomalies. Thus, last week, we celebrated
Saint Mary Magdalen - one of the most famous of saints, and the first
witness to Christ's resurrection - with a mere memorial, the lowest
rank of celebration. But on the following day we celebrated St Bridget
of Sweden - a person well known to the medievalists on this list, but
quite unknown to most English parishioners - with a Feast, and moreover
a day of special prayer for Europe.
