That is, monks he encountered in the _duchy_ (soon to be, in the Beneventan if not in the Carolingian view, principality) of Benevento. As written, this notice could be construed as indicating the _city_ of Benevento, which of course had monasteries of its own. But the monastery in question is that of San Vincenzo al Volturno, which latter, though not Montecassino, is certainly well enough known today to warrant mention by name. Late in life, Ambrose became its abbot, though only briefly (for a year or so).
